Akuto Sai is an orphan raised by a church who plans to become a great priest one day. Everything seems to be going so well at first: He possesses great magic power, is planning to go to school at the Constant Magic Academy, and even made friends with the Class Representative Junko Hattori on his first day. However, when Akuto goes in front of the Sorting Hat...err, vocational raven to determine his future, the raven proclaims that he will become the next Maou (a.k.a. 'Demon King'). The original Demon King who appeared 100 years ago sought to tear apart the current order of the world and was so powerful that he nearly succeeded before he was finally brought down, so this is not a good thing.
As expected, this revelation quickly spreads around the school, but Akuto can't see himself becoming the next Big Bad of the world, so he does everything in his power to convince his friends and classmates that he won't become the Maou. However, a string of unintended consequences follows as Akuto's actions only dig that metaphorical hole deeper. As the story goes on, he ends up gaining a harem of followers ranging from a young fanboy to a robotic private detective who all have their own reasons for wanting to see whether or not Akuto will become the Demon King.
Originally a series of light novels, Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou has received both a manga and anime adaptation. The anime aired in the spring of 2010.
Character sheets found here
The anime can be viewed legally at Crunchyroll here.
Tropes used in Ichiban Ushiro no Dai Maou include:
- Zero-Percent Approval Rating: Despite being a really nice guy, Akuto simply cannot convince people that he is not a Demon Lord. Every action he takes, for good or for ill, is viewed as a devious plot to further his own power (which, ironically, it usually does).
- Absurdly Powerful Student Council: In all senses. Not only do they wield ridiculous political power within the school, but they manage to hold off most of an army during the final battle. It helps that they're a vampire, a werewolf, Dr. Frankenstein (represented by the character piloting a Frankenstein themed mech), and a witch.
- Accidental Pervert: Akuto, about the normal amount for his genre and character type.
- Adaptation Distillation: The manga to the anime. Certain events and even characters (see below) are either modified or developed or completely overhauled...
- Adaptation Expansion: ...but they way the manga develops the events and characters can be considered superior to the anime series.
- Always Save the Girl: Akuto is willing to take on the world and even God himself to protect Keena.
- Art Shift: Episode 7. Borders on Off-Model.
- May also be a Shout Out, to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
- Arranged Marriage: Between Akuto and Junko, at least until he screwed it up by being Oblivious to Love. Her family didn't take it well...
- Attack of the 50 Foot Whatever: Giant demonic dogs, sea cucumbers, snails, chickens, etc.
- Back From the Dead: Torii-sensei is all too interested in studying Akuto. Dead or alive. But mostly dead.
- Badass Adorable: Korone and Lily.
- Badass Boast: Peterhausen: 'I am always prepared to die, but I am never prepared to lose!'
- Badass Longcoat: The robe Akuto wears ends up looking like one a lot.
- Bag of Holding: Korone's purse.
- Balanced Harem: Even the OP and the ED are careful to give equal screentime to all girls.
- Barehanded Blade Block: Slightly averted, as Akuto manages to do this once in the anime with his bare hands, but a good deal of blood ends up falling on his face from the attempt.
- He also manages to catch a rather large axe aimed at Hiroshi with just two fingers gripping the blade.
- Beach Episode: Episode six.
- Berserk Button: Anytime a villain threatens one of Akuto's friends, but especially the largely innocent Keena. Ooh boy does even mentioning hurting her throw him into an Unstoppable Rage.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Akuto is normally a nice guys, but piss him off..
- Also Junko´s little sister should be noted: Normally she is just a sweet pop idol, but give her sword and confront her with a monster and, boy, you will feel pity for the beast!
- Baka: After a magic ball incident Junko spends time lying on her bed, thinking about Akuto and repeating Baka over and over. Poor, lovestruck girl.
- Big Bad: Bouichirou Yamato.
- Bigger Bad: 'GOD'
- Big Damn Heroes: Korone in Episode 7. Same goes for Hiroshi/Brave.
- Just about ALL the female cast members in Episode 11
- Big Eater: Keena, especially where rice is involved.
- Black and White Morality: Hiroshi tells Akuto that there are usually two 'dons' in the school: the 'visible don' (currently held by Junko) who fights for everything that's good and just and tries to keep fellow students on the right path, and the 'invisible don' (unknown, but hinted to be Fujiko) who secretly deals in forbidden black magic and tries to tilt fellow students towards the dark side.
- Black Comedy Rape: Fujiko first by all the female students under the influence of the drugged rice then later by some sort of tentacle/snail monster, though it doesn't get very far before she blows it to kingdom come.
- Bokukko: Lily Shiraishi
- Brain In a Jar: Fujiko's brother (or what's left of him), but that doesn't stop her from having romantic feelings for him.
- Bromantic Foil: Hiroshi to Akuto, to the point where he calls him 'aniki' (big brother). There are various hints it may be more than that.
- Butt Monkey: Junko sure can get unlucky a lot...
- Can't Hold His Liquor: Kena gets really tipsy really quick.
- Censor Box: In the TV version, a Super-DeformedHexagonal Speech Balloon of the character in question pops up.
- For comedic effect they usually contain some message like, 'Sorry,' 'Nope,' or, 'Not gonna happen.'
- Censor Shadow: both black and white.
- Characterization Marches On: In spades with the manga to the anime; the only characters that are remotely the same in both are Korone, Keina, and Hiroshi. In the manga:
- Akuto can actually be seen as more aggressive and doesn't back down from fights as much to prove he's not the Maou.
- Junko's Tsundere tendecies are toned down and is a lot nicer then in the anime.
- Fujiko is less of a Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain and has actually succeeded in her plans thus far.
- Lily is VERY hotblooded and in her first appearence she fights (and BEATS) Akuto in no time flat.
- Chekhov's Gun: Towards the beginning of the third episode, Kena rambles on about how much she loves rice, how it can bring happiness to the world, and how she's not allowed to have a rice cooker so she wants to stash it in Akuto's room. Korone suggests using a chemical weapon launcher to cook the rice instead. Later on, when the entire school is attacking them, Korone pops out of nowhere and fires her weapon, now filled with rice, in order to save the day.
- Chewing the Scenery: In episode 7 Akuto has to do this, as well as using an Art Shift to fight Mr X.
- Chick Magnet: Akuto.
- Much to his chagrin, especially since most of his Unwanted Harem is insane.
- Clark Kenting: Hiroshi after drawing the sword that Only the Chosen May Wield (see below) and becoming a Superhero known as 'Brave'. After defeating the giant sea cucumber he changes out of his hero's costume and tells everyone he was rescued by the said hero.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Junko shows this subtly from time to time, and Korone goes into this mode one time while under orders to seduce Akuto.
- Closet Sublet: Korone stays the night in Akuto's closet.
- Clothing Damage: Happens to just about everyone, but Junko gets it worse than everyone else.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Keena (or is it Obfuscating Stupidity?)
- Color Coded for Your Convenience: As can be seen in the picture above, each of the main girls has different colored hair and hairstyles to differentiate themselves from each other.
- Combat Medic / Deadly Doctor: Korone has a special gun that can be used to administer medicines to friendlies and poison to foes. Later she even uses it to make it rain rice, just like Keena wanted.
- Cooldown Hug: Akuto manages to pacify Junko's rampage for a moment by grabbing her into a hug during which he blurts out his Love Confession (see below), but the solace doesn't last long.
- Covert Pervert: Korone
- Crapsack World: Lets face it, if your future big bad is evil because of good intentions and a 'High Priest' is also an assassin you get shades of this.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Akuto is a reasonable, nice guy who despises violence, but should you succeed in making him angry...
- And Keena shows signs of this as well.
- Cry Cute: Junko has one in episode 9 of the anime, after learning that Akuto didn't know his meeting with her family was a marriage proposal, and qualifies as a Woobie moment for her as well.
- Cycle of Revenge: If what the anime says is true, every hundred years or so the gods make a new demon lord so he can be killed and the cycle basically repeats each and every time, who knows how long this has been going on.
- And despite hitting the universal Reset Button and the end of the anime series, he's still destined to be the Demon King!
- Curtains Match the Window: Everyone in the above picture apart from Akuto and Lily.
- Cursed with Awesome: Two examples, Akuto and Yuuko.
- In Akuto's case, he has immense powers and has control over monsters, but because of the prophecy that he's supposed to become the Demon King, almost everyone's scared of him, despite anything he tries to do.
- In Yuuko's case, she was bitten by a monster when she was younger, and got infected with some of their mana/blood. As a result, she can sense when monsters are nearby, but it also makes her a little scared of them as well (except when she's on tv to fight Akuto's 'demon army' apparently). She also develops a rather nasty looking vein in the back of her neck.
- Cute Little Fangs: Lily Shiraishi, the Student Council President. It even gives her a bit of a lisp, which is not noticeable on the English dub.
- Deadpan Snarker: Korone
- Department of Redundancy Department: The official English title, 'Demon King Daimao,' means 'Demon King Demon King.' Though it's not like the direct translation ('First Behind Demon King') makes much sense either...
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: A dragon, who accepts Akuto as his master after that.
- Later they one up that victory by killing a god.
- Digging Yourself Deeper: The further Akuto tries to make things right, the more he seems to make them wrong.
- At one point he flat out tells Junko that nothing he says will convince her so he has no reason to try.
- The Ditz: Keena is a bit... special.
- Double Standard Rape (Female on Female): Fujiko and the female students when her first plan to enslave Akuto backfires.
- Dungeon Crawling: Thanks to a Treasure Map found by Akuto at the whim of the plot.
- Dynamic Entry: Eiko, doing a flying jump kick onto the stage.
- This seems to be her preferred method of entry.
- Everyone Can See It: Akuto and Junko, to the point everyone is convinced that they are already a couple...
- Family-Unfriendly Death: Fujiko's brother; in the anime he gets strangled, in the manga he gets his heart and spine ripped out of his body.
- Fan Nickname: No one remembers the girls' actual names. They're all referred to by the color of their hair.
- For the series as a whole, it's always referred to as Color Wars.
- Fan Service!
- Fearless Fool: Keena. So much so that she has no problem using an enormous black dragon as a bed.
- Femme Fatale: Eto Fujiko. She'd like to be The Vamp, but since she shows the potential to be redeemed (or at least have her Black Magic antics mitigated somewhat), this trope fits her better. By far the most sexual character in the show, not only in her intentions towards Akuto, but also having been on the receiving end of a Love-Potion fueled student orgy/gangbang (mostly off-screen) *and* the attentions of some horny tentacle monsters.
- Full-Frontal Assault: Junko attacks Eiko stark naked, during the Hot Spring scene. Since Akuto is also present things go slightly differently than she planned..
- Food as Bribe: In the manga, Korone will do practically anything for doll-shaped pancakes.
- Fundoshi: Junko wears a variant of this instead of conventional panties.
- Gainax Ending: Things get confusing towards the end.
- Genki Girl: Keena, particularly when it comes to rice.
- Genre Savvy: Korone knows her anime character archetypes well. She tries out a Playboy Bunny, a Tsundere, a little sister, a Meido, a Hospital Hottie, a Naked Apron...
- Getting Crap Past the Radar: In Episode 6, after Korone undergoes a 'personality shift' and wakes Akuto up first by elbow dropping him in the groin, she then tries a vigorous footjob. In the next shot he is on the floor facing away and there is an open box of tissues on the bed...
- Good Is Dumb: Everytime Akuto tries to be a nice guy, it turns out he's getting closer to becoming a demon lord.
- God Is Evil: Have your gods ever called a hit on an innocent person?
- Groin Attack: Akuto suffers from one at the hands of Korone, of all people.
- Gunship Rescue: The Black Crane. Subverted, as it actually helps Peterhausen recover and gets crashed by one of CIM08's agents shortly after.
- Healing Shiv: One of the first magical items we see Korone using is a medic gun. It shoots healing lasers.
- Henshin Hero: Hiroshi is The Chosen One. A sword in the stone turns into his Transformation Trinket (which resembles a Chrono Changer), turning him into the hero, Brave, to fight a giant sea cucumber.
- Hero with an F In Good: Akuto.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Peterhausen, who left behind one of his teeth as a memento of himself to Akuto before going down with the gods.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: Takashi Kondo (of Train Heartnet and Ken Sugisaki fame) is Akuto in the anime.
- Yoko Hikasa voices Junko.
- Joji Nakata voices a dragon!!. With a quite silly name...
- AkiToyosaki voices Keena.
- Shizuka Ito voices another Ojou with brocon tendencies.
- Beside Yui and Mio, two other members of Afterschool Teatime voice two members of the student council: Azusa as the vice-president and Mugi as the android secretary.
- The secret of Mitsuko's hotness? She's aBoobie Lady.
- Dub version has MelissaDavis (Kena), Chris Patton (Akuto), MaggieFlecknoe(Kotone), Luci Christian (Junko) and Greg Ayres (Hiroshi).
- Hitler's Time Travel Exemption Act: Bouichirou went forward in time to kill the reincarnation of the Maou and/or become one himself. It didn't work out that way when Bouichirou was killed and Akuto hit the universal Reset Button anyway at the end of the show.
- Hot Chick with a Sword: Junko, who sometimes becomes a Girl with Psycho Weapon due to her Tsundere tendencies.
- Hot Springs Episode: Underground hot springs with naked swordfighting.
- Idol Singer: Yuri Hoshino.
- Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Fujiko.
- Innocent Fanservice Girl: One of Keena Soga's powers involves personal Invisibility, but she can't conceal any clothing, so when she has to become invisible she just goes in her birthday suit.
- Instant Expert: Akuto who apparently mastered his powers pretty well a day from when they started to manifest.
- Well, as long as it doesn't require him to not explode/break things.
- Hiroshi after getting his Superhero Power-Up. Subverted somewhat, as he had an AI guiding him on weapon use.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Korone after asking Akuto to marry Junko (see Shipper on Deck below), telling him that this 'order' was hard for her to do.
- Kill the Ones You Love: Junko actually ends up killing Akuto in Chapter 15 of the manga.
- Knight Templar: Junko veers towards this moreso in the Anime then in the Manga.
- Hiroshi as 'Brave' may be heading in this direction as well.
- Large Ham: Mr X. Being a ham is actually the basis of his power.
- Laser-Guided Karma: In the anime, when Keena says something that causes the lynch mob Junko's assembled to turn on her as well, she pleads with them that they've misunderstood and should listen to her explanation, then asks Sai to say something. He points out that he's been trying to say the exact same thing to her almost since he arrived at school, and that they're unlikely to listen any more than she did.
- Little Miss Snarker: Korone
- Loophole Abuse: There is no rule stating that one can't keep a dragon in school.
- Lovable Sex Maniac: Korone
- Love Confession: Akuto blurts this out to Junko while she's in a rage, mainly to try and calm her down; it only makes things worse.
- Love Letter Lunacy: Happens in the 2nd special episode. Junko decides to write a love letter to Akuto because she can't say it straight to his face, but finds herself too embarrassed to write the letter as well. So Yuuko does it for her, and makes the letter rather blunt (to the point of lampshading Junko's being a Tsundere) further embarrassing Junko. Hilarity Ensues when Eiko finds out and steals the letter to use it to blackmail Junko.
- Love Potion: Fujiko tried to get Akuto to take one that would make him fall in love with her alone. Keena accidentally made it so that everyone else in the school (the female students, apparently) fell in love with Fujiko instead.
- Luminescent Blush: Junko is getting more and more prone to this around Akuto.
- Manipulative Bitch: Fujiko is secretly planning to use Akuto's power for her own goals.
- Secretly? Hell, Akuto himself notices, and even lampshades it:
Akuto: But you're the sort of person who doesn't do anything without first calculating personal benefit...
- More Dakka: The Black Crane airship in episode 10 works on this principle. Not that it helps them any.
- Well it's not like more dakka could have stopped the helmsman from driving the ship straight into the ground.
- Motor Mouth: Korone's speech rate gets accelerated a bit when she's in Tsundere mode.
- Ms. Fanservice: Above and beyond the call of duty, Fujiko Etou, who throughout the show has had no less than three dialogue scenes in her lingerie and is the go to character for tentacles.
- Her and Junko, who gets Clothing Damage at least once per episode.
- Mundane Utility: A giant military weapon used to feed the school. Keena was right all along.
- My Eyes Are Leaking: Korone.
- Name's the Same: No, Master Vile isn't who the title's referring to.
- Nay Theist: Akuto repeatedly denigrates belief in gods and says they 'are just a system'. Later, we find out he's right, and he destroys the system.
- Naughty Tentacles: Fujiko's monsters quite often and to the detriment of her clothing.
- Ninja: An entire clan of them. Yuri Hoshino/Yuuko Hattori is a ninja idol singer, with a bit of Spider Sense.
- Noble Demon: It's hard to believe that Akuto can be a Demon King considering he tries his best to be a good guy.
- Not So Harmless: The first two episodes let us to believe that Akuto Sai is a pushover who's only dangerous when his powers malfunction. Then the third episode came and he showed something that he admits to be his 'true character.' And well yeah, about that... Let's just say that he was chosen as the next Demon King for a reason.
- Not So Different: Akuto and the last Demon lord both have the same goal, which makes us wonder if we're getting the whole story here.
- Ojou: Fujiko is the leader of the school's discipline committee, an expert in magic and medicine, and has her own fan club (composed of boys andgirls).
- Obfuscating Stupidity: The final episode of the anime hints that Kena's Cloudcuckoolander personality was just a front, and that she was really a reincarnation of the last girl who made a contract with the previous demon lord. Occasionally her past self takes control at the subconscious level without her knowledge.
- Off-Model: One of Keena's hands seems a tad bit too small when Yamato lays her down in episode 12.
- One Dialogue, Two Conversations: When Akuto goes to visit Junko's father, he doesn't realize that the reason for the visit is a marriage interview, rather than just a typical meet and greet. Junko however, thought he knew, and their conversation is pretty ambiguous until she secretly meets with him in his room at night.
- Only a Flesh Wound:When she gets shot square in the back, Korone just shrugs it off despite the blood dripping down her body.
- Only the Chosen May Wield: Episode 7 reveals a sword kept in a shrine built by Hiroshi's grandfather which can only be drawn by a 'True Hero'.
- OOC Is Serious Business: At the end, the student council member who always says 'guga' says something other than 'guga'.
- It's because of the effects of the Retcon (see below).
- Our Dragons Are Different: Peterhausen, a giant dragon who's the Demon King's best friend. Like Akuto himself, not that bad of a guy apparently. Also, our dragon breathes DRILLS.
- Panty Shot: All the times, as well as a Fundoshi variation. Korone's activation pull cord is located right above her buttocks, which leads to this trope being invoked regardless.
- Person of Mass Destruction: Akuto. He can't help it for being a destined Demon King, and demonstrates it by blowing up a classroom, and soon after that, creating a 50 foot wide crater, both just from DEFENDING HIMSELF!
- Power of Love: In Junko's case it can wipe out small armies.
- Potty Emergency: Kena realizes this when trapped in the meditation chamber. Korone offers to help her in an unexpected way. Hilarity continues outside the meditation chamber.
- Punny Name: You just know that a poor guy's journey to be a hero of good and kindness is going to be a bumpy one when his name 'Sai Akuto' can literally be read as 'Ultimate Villain', 'Saiakuto' (最悪人), if read phonetically.
- And Hiroshi seems to be a bilingual pun/play on the word 'Hero' (think 'HEROshi'), as befitting the Legendary Hero of his town that he became.
- Rage Against the Heavens: Despite being raised by the church, Akuto had trouble believing in God. Now that a God is purported to be ordering an assassination against his friend, It Gets Worse.
- Random Power Ranking: In the manga, Akuto is told he ranks number two on the academy's 'Most Evil' ranking.
- Razor Floss: Brave has this as one of his weapons.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Akuto's eyes turn red it's kick ass time!
- Refusal of the Call: Hiroshi didn't want to be The Chosen One.
- This could also apply to Akuto, who refuses to perform the role that the demon lord was supposed to do, which was attack humanity with a bunch of demons, then merge with the law of identity and recreate humanity
- Required Secondary Powers: If you ignore the bad press, getting to be a Demon Lord seems to be a pretty sweet deal: lots of girls, tons of neat powers, and a dragon'. Too bad he's still getting a hang of that whole 'controlling your insane levels of power' thing.
- Retcon: An in-universe example: Keena uses her powers as the Law of Identity to make it so that Akuto was never the Demon Lord. However, Akuto discovers that the Status Quo is the greatest God of all when the vocational raven repeats his prediction from the beginning.
- The Rival: Eiko is this towards Junko, and apparently the rivalry goes all the way back to their respective families.
- Robot Girl: Korone, a 'Liladan' sent to spy on Akuto, is a Ridiculously Human Robot. There's also a robot girl on the student council.
- Schizo-Tech: welcome to the year 3000. Humanity has created magic, has magic based mag-lev trains, can create androids, created a nanomachine based power-armor that can use plasma weaponry and has created an omnicidal maniac singularity that creates a genetically engineered human once every 100 years to try and wipe out its creators. All this, and yet the best the military can field when it comes to taking down the Sai Akuto is a legion of soldiers armed with .50cal machine-guns, swords and samurai armor, as well as a massive flying battleship.
- Screw Destiny: Akuto is trying to do this with regards to his future career as the Big Bad. Emphasis on trying.
- Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The student body really seems hell bent on alienating Akuto, don't they?
- It seems to be an 'Okay, so he's going to become the future Big Bad, let's make him an outcast so he won't conquer the world in xx years', type of thing. Because turning someone into a social pariah will totally not instill feelings of frustration and a desire for revenge, nope, not at all.
- Ship Tease: Aside from the Love Confession, there's also the fifth episode where Akuto 'choses' Junko seemingly on instinct.
- Shipper on Deck: By episode 7, Korone declares that her new 'mission' is to get Akuto married to a 'woman from a good family', and even goes as far as to bluntly ask him to marry Junko, who becomes embarrassingly horrified by this and runs away screaming.
- Shout-Out: In the anime, to Princess Resurrection. The android in question has a similar Verbal Tic to the ones in Princess Resurrection - 'Guga' ('Fuga' in the other anime).
- The 'emergence rate of demon beasts' report shows an Ohmu.
- The student council has the same kind of lineup as the four lead girls of Renkin San-kyuu Magical Pokaan, if you count Riri's hat. You also have a werewolf, a vampire, and a robot. But both series are probably making a shout-out to a 1960's manga called Kaibutsu-kun, where the four characters were male instead of female.
- Slouch of Villainy: Akuto and his Unwanted Harem have a photograph of this taken after Akuto defeats Peterhausen.
- Spanner in the Works: Soga Keena.
- Spell My Name with an 'S': Constan/Constant/Constantin Magical Academy. Which one is it?
- Official subs (read: the ones used by the Anime Network stream) use the first spelling.
- There are several recognizable buildings in the city, which place the academy in Constantinople.
- Student Council President: Lily Shiraishi.
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo: Fujiko
- The Gadfly: Korone
- The Tease: Korone and Eiko.
- The Reveal: Hiroshi is destined to be the Hero, and Keena is the reincarnation of the Law of Identity.
- Testosterone Poisoning: The anime ventures into this in the later episodes, presumably due to having to condense the sudden onset of plot in the novels into lots of shirtless Akuto shouting.
- Thanks for the Mammary: Akuto on Keena; thanks to her invisibility spell Akuto had to feel around find out what was holding the supposedly floating bento, and his hand ended up on her breasts.
- In episode 5 after subduing the demon wolf who's actually one of the student council members in disguise, Akuto ends up holding Junko with his arm wrapped around her assets (and while they're both naked). Cue a Luminescent Blush when she realizes it.
- The Call Knows Where You Live: Don't want to be The Chosen One, Hiroshi? Too bad, the Monster Of The Day is attacking your hometown!
- This Is a Drill: Best Breath Weapon ever? Best Breath Weapon ever!
- Took a Level In Badass: Hiroshi after getting the Brave suit upgrade. Prior to that he was largely seen as an average, detail oriented, guy.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Keena and rice in all of its forms.
- Tranquil Fury: Akuto can be really, really, really scary, if he wants to.
- In the manga, it's more of an Unstoppable Rage than anything else.
- Tsundere: Junko is a textbook example.
- Unexpected Genre Change: Episode 7.
- Underestimating Badassery: It is said that he's going to be a Demon King and a small demonstration of his power has been witnessed, yet there are still those that insist that they can take him on.
- Wait'll the delinquents get a load of Peterhausen. It'll be a race to see who turns their pants brown first.
- Unwanted Harem: While the anime seems to play this straight at first, this is then subverted when really, the only character to even make a move is Junko.
- Wingding Eyes: Junko routinely gets swirly eyes after being knocked out from Akuto's power backlash.
- World of Badass: Even the idol is actually a ninja!
- Villain Ball Magnet: This is the core trope of the show, everything revolves around it.
- Visual Innuendo: The sea cucumber scene.
- We Can Rebuild Him: Eiko's father returns as a cyborg to cliffhang the penultimate episode.
- Why Did It Have To Be Sea Cucumbers: Junko is scared to death of those slimy critters. Getting splattered by one specimen's slime eventually resulted in a Cry Cute scene.
- X Meets Y: Think of this series as Kyou Kara Maou meets Harry Potter. With lots of Fetish Fuel added.
- Tenchi Muyo! meets Kyouran Kazoku Nikki.
- Harry Potter meets Doraemonmeets The Matrix.
- You Can't Fight Fate: Akuto wants to become a high priest and help people out. The problem is that destiny likes screwing him in return, thanks to his lack of experience in school politics and shaky control of his power.
- Hiroshi was predicted to be The Chosen One, which conflicts with his friendship with Akuto.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: This is how fans identify who is who more than their real names.
- Zettai Ryouiki: All of the female students.

Akuto Sai meets Junko Hattori on the train to Constant Magic Academy. The two make a powerful pact to make the world a better place, a pact that will mean death if broken. Upon arrival, Akuto is told he is destined to be the Demon King, and the entire school begins to fear him. After his introduction in class reaches a zealous climax, a fellow student named Hiroshi Miwa looks up to him, while the rest of the class becomes even more terrified. Eventually, Akuto slips up when he volunteers for 'cleaning duty', which is slang in the academy for becoming a 'cleaner', an assassin that maintains the school's secrets. This infuriates Junko, who challenges him to a duel that ends with Akuto accidentally destroying the classroom in a magical explosion. His later attempts to reconcile with Junko at her dorm again launch her into a murderous frenzy, resulting in a chase through the woods. There, Akuto runs into Kena Soga mid-fight, and she resolves to protect him for personal, though unspecified reasons. She is unable to do so, and Akuto again ends the fight with another freak explosion. Immediately after, he is greeted by Korone, an 'observer'.

Akuto meets with the principal of the academy with Korone, whom the principal ordered to stay with Akuto as a bodyguard and a judge of whether or not he will truly become a demon king. Akuto meets with Fujiko Eto the following day, who pledges to help him despite his destiny. She later recommends that they meet in secret in the mountains behind the school, and instructs him on how to disable Korone. En route, Akuto and Korone are attacked by a demon dog, an animal mutated by mana. Akuto is able to absorb the creature's mana and return it to a puppy, a feat that astounds Korone. The puppy picks up Kena's scent, whose ability to become invisible is revealed. After deactivating Korone, Akuto rendezvous with Fujiko in the mountains, where she asks him to join the school's disciplinary committee to help clear his name. As an emergency way to reconcile with Junko, she also gives him a two-shot magical gun that fires medicinal tablets, which she claims will allow the two people shot by it to understand each other's feelings. On the way back, he is tackled by Kena, still fleeing from the puppy, and is rendered visible and exposed in clear view of the now-reactivated Korone. In exchange for testifying to Korone that Akuto did not try to molest her, Kena requests his friendship, which he agrees to. At the end, Fujiko is shown contacting Junko, falsely claiming that Akuto had threatened her. Fujiko then enters a secret passage in her room, where she converses with her brother's severed head about her plans for Akuto.

During a late-night soak in the male bathhouse, Hiroshi informs Akuto about the school's underground, and mentions that Junko gained her popularity at the school by fighting this underground. As Fujiko arranges a meeting between Akuto and Junko the following afternoon, Akuto meets with the student council with regard to his application for being the disciplinary committee's representative. Akuto has to deal with Korone in order to meet with Junko, and decides the only way to ensure she is out of the way is by pulling her tail again, which leads to a misunderstanding until Kena interrupts to dump her rice cooker on Akuto (since she was banned from keeping it in her room) as a gesture and proof of their friendship. The meeting with Junko turns out to be an ambush by members of the underground, and Akuto swiftly beats them, only for Junko to appear when the dust settles. Mistaking the act as a wrongdoing, she publicly calls Akuto out for punitive justice, and together with a large crowd of students, chase Akuto around the school. Kena intervenes at the last moment before Junko can complete her punitive justice. Junko admits that the situation got out of hand and that she was partly responsible for the misunderstanding that prompted the mob to come after Akuto, only to have the mob call her out for turning back to Akuto's side. Korone saves the situation by showering the angry mob of students in medicated rice.

Kena's intervention manages to somehow make Junko and Akuto friends again, but during a class lesson on mana control, he knocks her unconscious again. Mitsuko recommends that he go into the mental discipline chamber, one where people are said to have died. Akuto gets depressed, but for some strange reason, Korone and Kena tag along and he is caught between the two of them. They find a mysterious map and Kena is intrigued, wondering if it is a treasure map. Fujiko recognize what the map truly is. The next day, Kena copies the map and posts it all over the school. It becomes the talk of the whole academy, because students keep getting hurt as they try to find the treasure. Akuto, in his role as the disciplinary committee member, insists that they give up looking, but a girl named Eiko Teruya suddenly appears and he ends up having to find it himself.

Akuto, Korone, Hiroshi, and Eiko go to the school's underground labyrinth to find the spot on the map. They encounter a cloaked being who tries to stop them with swarms of bats, but is easily defeated. Akuto digs up a plush recording device buried under a tombstone that guides them to an abandoned research facility, where they are attacked by an armored statue. Inside the statue, Eiko finds a screen that points to an underground shrine behind a cavern hot spring. Meanwhile, Junko, Kena, and Fujiko make their way to the labyrinth. Junko, who fell underground into the hot spring, tells Akuto that Eiko is actually a government spy. A savage wolf comes after them, but they are saved when Kena and Fujiko arrive. Eiko, in tears after seeing Akuto protect Junko over her, leaves after giving him a key from the shrine. When Fujiko activates the key, it transports them to the headquarters of the student council, who were responsible for the attacks. It is revealed that the headquarters is really the base of the Demon King. Aiming to uncover what her brother had forgotten, Fujiko uses the items her brother left behind to awaken the treasured dragon beast Peterhausen. The dragon beast reacts to an unknown catalyst (implied to be Kena) and replays a record of the events leading to Fujiko's brother's death, causing Fujiko to collapse. An enraged Akuto confronts Peterhausen, soon becoming his new master, despite his wishes. After that the student council president kisses him as a reward for finding the treasure first.

Under observation by the government, Akuto is depressed to find out he cannot go to the seaside school on an island. Korone arranges for him to go by offering to take responsibility for him herself. However, she makes constant attempts to seduce him. Akuto tries to enjoy going to the beach with Junko, but both Kena and Korone interrupt when the former two are having fun. Later on, Hiroshi tells Akuto about the legend of the Demon King that is told by the people on the island. The legend says that the revival of the demon king and the dragon will call forth a legendary hero who will defeat them in battle, but Akuto is skeptical. Meanwhile, Lily Shiraishi, informing Fujiko about the government's plan to use Akuto for its own benefit, says that she will handle this situation on her own.

In a flashback, Hiroshi learns he is destined to become a hero. In the present time, Korone leaves after saying she has failed in her mission, which she hints as being her failure to seduce and manipulate Akuto. Yukiko Miwa, Hiroshi's younger sister, goes to Akuto to verify if he is truly the Demon King. After both Akuto and Hiroshi deny their destinies, Yukiko runs off in tears. Hiroshi later explains that beneath the legendary lake is a shrine inside a cave, where there is a sword in the stone. A mysterious man, known as Mr. X, awakens a mana-absorbing sea cucumber beast from the lake. Mr. X captures Yukiko, but Hiroshi and Kena try to fight back. However, Hiroshi is pummeled into the lake and Kena is captured. Akuto and Junko rescue Yukiko and Kena, but Mr. X sends the beast to destroy the village on the island, and then overwhelms Akuto with anti-magic attacks. After Akuto understands the secret behind Mr. X's attacks, Mr. X turns his attention to Junko, Yoriko, and Kena. Luckily, Korone returns just in time to stop Mr. X's attack. Meanwhile, Hiroshi goes to the shrine, pulls the sword out of the stone, and gains the powers of a hero. The sword gives Hiroshi the name Brave, and he uses a plasma-like attack to eradicate the beast. Korone admits that she tried to seduce Akuto in order to teach him how to develop an intimate relationship with someone of status (like Junko), and she previously believed she had failed because it seemed like Akuto had fallen for Kena.

Akuto ponders if the hairpiece Kena wears is the same one he gave to her as an orphaned child. Fujiko wants to control a beast of her own, obtaining an demon beast egg after slaying a slug beast. An easygoing Kena still skips class constantly, much to Akuto's worry. Akuto does not realize that Junko actually has feelings for him, especially when Akuto himself is trying to persuade Kena to attend class again. Kena steals the demon beast egg from Fujiko in her sleep, soon hatching into a two-headed chicken beast. Akuto tries to attack the beast, but it evades. Hiroshi quickly annihilates the beast before it causes further damage to the city. Korone later tells a depressed Junko to discuss an omiai to Akuto with her parents.

Without either of their input, it is decided that an omiai is to be held at Junko's village. Junko, who has feelings for Akuto, is unable to tell him, and so invites him to the village for other reasons. Akuto knows nothing of the marriage interview, but feels responsible for the messes he has caused and decides to go with her. There they meet Yuko Hattori, Junko's younger sister. She is not only revealed as a pop star idol, but she bears a scar on her neck of which was bitten by a demon beast long ago. That night, Junko readies herself and visits his room, where she lets him know why he was invited to the village. This leads to another misunderstanding as several clan members chase Akuto after seeing Junko in tears. As Akuto flees, he is confronted by Eiko, who tells him that the gods have decided Kena as a threat, and orders her clan to eliminate Kena. On school grounds, Kena is saved by Boichiro Yamato, the leader of the Cabinet Intelligence Magic Office, from being assassinated. He only shows interest in making her his own to control the gods, calling her the 'principle of identity'. Akuto uses his power to transport himself to the school grounds, but he realizes that Yamato surpasses him in strength.

Akuto defeats Hiroshi in the sky, and carries him down to a forest for Yuko to look after him. Meanwhile, Yamato has taken Kena to the shrine and attempts to make the contract with the principle of identity, but Akuto appears and the battle begins in the presence of the gods. Akuto at last defeats Yamato and takes back Kena. He learns that the demon king was created by the gods to make the contract with the principle of identity and destroy humanity. Akuto refuses and declares his intent to kill the gods, causing their defense system to activate. Akuto puts his life on the line to battle the gods, and put an end to the story they have created. Peterhausen gives Kena a dragon tooth as a memento for his predetermined death. Akuto and Kena reunite with Junko, Korone, Hiroshi, Fujiko, Lily, and Yuko. Everyone starts a new semester at the academy, in which the battle of the demon king altered the memories of those involved. However, Akuto is (once again) declared to be the future Demon King, and Junko and the others react the same way they did in the first episode, suggesting Akuto will have to start all over again with the same reputation and troubles. |
